The stroller that saved me this week!

I think that the goals of posting and cooking for this week were a little lofty.. All of my energy was devoted to work and little Lincoln... he went to work with me and let me tell you 11 hour days with a baby were draining. By the time I got home I had NO energy to cook dinner or write a blog post.

Let me tell you though Lincoln was SOOOO well behaved! He still sleeps of a majority of the day so he slept in his new stroller and when I needed to go brief the boss or pack things up he just went with me.

I had purchased a bassinet to keep at work but it was really the stroller that I used the whole time due to the fact that I was in and out of my office the whole time. The BabyZen YoYo+ stroller is AMAZING.

I didn't think that I needed another stroller with number four but this stroller is GAME CHANGER!

So compact, easy to maneuver with just one hand, comfy for baby to sleep in the pram, folds up SUPER small, and easy to fold/unfold.

I HIGHLY recommend!!!!

Now I need to have another BABY!

Really Banana Republic!!! My little guy turns 1 in exactly a MONTH and NOW is the time that you come out with a baby line that only goes up to 12 MONTHS!!!

They just introduced BR MINI!

The collection really is too cute for words and I am trying to practice some MAJOR self-control at the moment!!! I mean Gibson is still small for his age and could probably get 2-3 more months in 6-12 month clothes.... Something tells me that Matt Park would not approve of the splurge! GRRRR

Fingers crossed that this first line does well and they expand!

Diaper Station

So with the arrival of my third child there was one particular area that I was sure to set-up before his arrival. From experience I knew that this would be the MOST used area for the first few weeks of Gibson's life and that was the DIAPER STATION located in our bedroom!

It is on the back of our bed because I wanted to keep everything within arms reach and easily accessible.

I found the great bin from Homegoods for only $12.99. I love the gray and white chevron print and knew that I would later be able to use it for something else.

Inside the bin I have...
  • swaddle blankets
  • gowns
  • Gauze pads
  • diapers
  • wipes
  • little waterproof mats
  • vaseline
  • nail clippers
In front of the diaper station we always have all of the supplies ready for the next diaper.

This includes: a pad to put down to protect the bed, Seventh Generation Wipes, Diapers (we use Honest diapers until big enough to fit into cloth... the ones here are pampers leftover from the hospital), Johnson & Johnson Hospital Grade 2x2 Gauze pads (for circumcision care), and Vaseline

Here is a close-up of the gaze pad box

We lay out all items first and lay the little guy right on the pad and do our business!

After Gibson's diaper is changed we go ahead and get all the items together again in front of the diaper station for the next messy diaper.

"squirreling" Part Two

As I mentioned in my post Monday I'm currently experiencing "squirreling" and making freezer meals in anticipation of Gibson's arrival.

While doing my menu planning over the last few weeks I've been sure to incorporate a few freezer meals where I created a LARGE quantity of food so that there was one dish for that night and additional meals (made at the same time) that I could put into the freezer for later.

One of the meals that I did was Chicken Broccoli Rice Casserole. This recipe made 4 meals... so one for right away and 3 that I have squirreled away in the freezer for future nights.

Here are the details...

Ingredients:
  • 10 Cups Cooked Rice
  • 4 Cups Cooked Chicken
  • 4 Cups Chopped Broccoli
  • 2 Cans Cream of Broccoli Soup
  • 3 Cans Cream of Chicken Soup
  • 4 Cups Shredded Chicken (1 lb block shredded)
  • Salt and Pepper
Directions:

First, I cooked up my chicken. I used Chicken Tenders(they were on sale) and seasoned with salt and pepper and cooked for 20 minutes at 350 in the oven...

While my chicken was cooking I chopped and steamed some fresh broccoli in the microwave. (you can also use frozen if that is easier).

Mixed my steamed broccoli with the cream of broccoli and chicken soups.

Shredded my cheese. Cheaper to buy a 1 lb block and shred it yourself.

Cooked Rice... 4 cups of uncooked rice ended up making 10 Cups of cooked rice.

Took the Chicken out of the oven and chopped

Mixed everything together... Started mixing in a large bowl but there was sooooo much food that I quickly had to transition to my largest pot!

Placed 1/4 into a 8x8 pan and the rest was divided into three 1-Gallon Freezer bags!

On the outside I placed a sticker with the date, meal name, and cooking instructions.

Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes!

When ready to eat the meals that are frozen I will simply take out the night before and place in the fridge to thaw and I will place in a 8x8 baking dish when ready to eat!

We ate the casserole with a mixed green and beet salad. Yummy in my tummy!

And just so you know what this cost:
  • Rice $2.49
  • Cream of broccoli soup $1.98
  • Cream of Chicken Soup $2.97
  • Broccoli, fresh $5.67
  • 4 lbs Chicken tenders (on sale) $11.00
  • 1lb Sharp Cheddar block of Cheese $7.59
  • TOTAL: $31.70 divided by 4 = 7.93 each meal

I'm "Squirreling"

Now nesting is a popular and well known term associated with the end of pregnancy but I'm going to talk about a lesser known term today... squirreling!

It is something that I'm currently going through. I've been busy making meals for post-baby and "squirreling" them away in my freezer!

I've been doing Let's Dish:

Per their website: "At Let’s Dish!, we’re revolutionizing the way busy families put dinner on the table. At our stores customers make delicious, freezer-ready meals in just two hours."

I love that I can go to the store and everything is already chopped up for me and that there is NO clean up. After a few hours with Emma I leave with meals that go right into my freezer with cooking directions right on the outside.

The first time that I did Let's Dish was only last month when Emma got me 4-Full meals for Valentine's Day! We did the "dishing" together and both really enjoyed the experience. In fact we were actually able to make 6 meals on that first visit because two of the dishes were large enough to split into two smaller dishes as opposed to 1 large dish..

Because we enjoyed the time together and the ease of just pulling  meals out of the freezer to cook we went back again last Saturday and "dished" 8 Full Meals (a gift from my parents). We ended up with 4 Larger meals and 8 smaller meals. So 12 total!

Currently in my freezer from my last dishing session:
  • 1- Bacon Cheddar Sliders (even comes with the rolls) and makes 12 sliders
  • 1- Shrimp Scampi with Linguini
  • 2 - Chicken Breasts with Balsamic and Mixed Potatoes
  • 2 - Lemon Chicken with Asparagus
  • 2 - Mediterranean Tilapia and Veggies
  •  1- Thai style Pork Wraps (this is a croc pot meal and I'm sure that we will have leftovers for another meal that week)
  • 2- Western Frittatas
  • 1- Whiskey Beef Over Noodles (this is a croc pot meal and I'm sure that we will have leftovers for another meal that week)
I also still have one meal left in the freezer from my February session. It's the Java Pork Tenderloin... and I have 2 packages of Pumpkin Ravioli that I purchased from their "ready-made" freezer section.

That means that from my Let's Dish experiences alone I have 15 meals in the freezer for after baby!

It is something that I think that I will continue to do on a once-a-month basis with Emma. It will be a way to get away from the boys and just do something together and I plan to combine it with lunch out. Additionally, Emma really takes a lot of pride in the meals that we create there and she gets very excited when we eat one. In fact, we are NOT allowed to eat them on nights that she is at her dad's house because she does not want to miss a meal...

I've also been busy "squirreling" away on my own. Thanks to pinterest I've found a ton of easy freezer meals to put together on my own and I will be back, this week, with one of the meals that I've made.

Favorite things at 14 Months

Here are a few of my Hunter Man's Favorite things at 14 MONTHS.. and a few items that I like.

Squooshi Reusable Food Pouches! I love these Food pouches that we can reuse with our own apple sauces and yogurts. They are also SUPER easy to clean! I purchased my on a Zulily flash sale...

Hide and Squeak shoes:  These are the best shoes. Very well made, they fit well, and they are SUPER fun because as Hunter runs around the house they squeak! He laughs at all the noise that they make and if mommy or daddy ever want a break from the squeak... we can remove it easily.

Green Toys Tug Boat: Bath time is a favorite in the park household! Hunter is SUPER independent during his bath and loves to spill the water all over himself with his little tugboat. My First Green Toys are manufactured and assembled in California from 100% post-consumer milk jugs, and contains no BPA, phthalates or PVC... Green Toy products are a go to for gifts for kiddoes 4 and under and I'm sure that Hunter will have many more toys from this product line coming his way.
Lightning McQueen Racer Ride-On: Hunter LOVES the Ride-on that he got for his birthday (THANK YOU KIM AND JEFF!!) He likes to press all the buttons on the steering wheel to hear all of the fun sounds. He also likes it when Emma pushes him around our main floor on it.
KidKraft Ball Run: Hunter got this gift last Christmas but has just really started to take an interest in this fun toy. He loves pushing the ball through the hole and catching it on the bottom of the toy!
GAP JEANS: I love the GAP jeans for toddlers. They are frequently on sale and I typically get them for under $20. Which is not cheap but I figure with another boy on the way I might as well get a good quality product now and have it for the next little man to use.
Bemis Slow close with built-in potty seat: Now this is not a Hunter favorite item but a GREAT product that Matt and I BOTH love for him. This is the toilet seat that we had installed in Hunter's bathroom... we like that it is slow close but most of all we love that it has a built-in potty seat that is a perfect size for his tiny (super cute) booty! Hunter sits on the potty every morning and typically 2-3 times in the evening. Our thing is that if we have to go we put him on the potty also just to try... Sometimes he goes and sometimes he doesn't... it is a no pressure activity. He in fact likes it because we play with toys and read books while on the potty so it is fun time.
Plan Toys Dancing Alligator: Hunter loves to pull this little wooden alligator all around the house! He especially likes the clanking noise that it makes!

Top 10 Nursing Items

I wanted to share the items that I have found most helpful while breastfeeding.

1. Medela Pump In Style. I LOVE my Medela Pump In Style. At work I use a Medela Hospital Grade pump that it located in our lactation rooms but for home and travel I would not have lasted this long without this WONDERFUL pump! Thank you Virginia! I was lucky enough not to have to purchase the pump myself as I'm currently able to borrow it from a great friend. All I needed to do was purchase my own hoses, shields, and bottles and I've been set. The pump retails for 299.99 and I was able to purchase attachments for under $50.00 at Amazon. (your milk does not actually flow into the machine... nothing goes though the valves) I would also recommend investing in a 9 volt power adapter for the pump so that you do not BLOW through batteries. (Suction is also more powerful when plugged into the wall). Medela makes an adapter but save your money and just get one from Amazon... they are no different. ANOTHER, thing that I have loved about this pump is that there is a SMALL black pouch that can be easily removed from the backpack... because it just isn't my style. When I've needed to travel with my pump I remove the pouch and take that in a cute bag with all of my gear.

2. Lansinoh Disposable Nursing Pads. These were great to have on hand especially in the beginning as I would start leaking the second Hunter would start to cry... or even when I would think about him. Well worth the $12.99 to save yourself the embarrassment of leaking through your top!

3. Lansinoh Breastmilk storage bags. I absolutely love these storage bags! I've tried out ALL of the milk storage bags and these are top on my list with Medela bags being a far second. I pump into the Medela bottles and once I have 5 oz I pour the milk into these bags and lay flat in the freezer. I like that they are longer, lay flat, and have a very convenient location to write info on.
4. Lansinoh HPA Lanolin. This is a MUST buy for the first few weeks of breastfeeding. It gets VERY uncomfortable to the point that you might want to cry (just being honest) but this really does help and it is safe for baby.

5. Burp Clothes. I'm a huge fan of making your own burp cloths. But in case you don't have the time or don't like to DIY the Swaddle Designs brand makes a GREAT burp cloth. We have a few and I feel like they are a great quality and they come in SUPER CUTE designs! Highly recommend.

6. aden+anais Muslin Swaddle Blankets. These are the ultimate item that EVERYONE needs to have on hand. Not only are they great as swaddle blankets but I use them all the time as a cover when I am feeding Hunter in public! I'm not a fan of the whole "nursing cover" it makes me feel like I'm wearing a smock! I like that these blankets are large so they provide great coverage AND they are lightweight and provide great ventilation for baby! Another plus is that they come in such cute designs!

7. AVENT Thermal Gel packs. Another necessity for those sore nipples when you first start feeding. I love that you can both warm and cool these gel packs. Warm use to stimulate milk flow before feeding and cold use to soothe sore or engorged breasts. In fact I would recommend purchasing two (packs of 2) so that you can keep one set in the freezer at all times.

8. Medela Breastpump Accessory Set. Always good to have additional shields and bottles for use when others are in the dishwasher! I've also enjoyed having the microwave Cleaning bags. Steam cleaning eliminates germs on breast pump, accessories, bottles, nipples, and more. I use them in my office frequently because the water at the pumping room doesn't get warm enough to really sanitize my equipment. I also like that they have 20 uses per bag!

9. Fenugreek. As my supply has decreased I started taking these Fenugreek tablets to assist with my milk production. I also took Mothers Milk Tea and MotherLove - More Milk Plus from Whole Foods. The MotherLove Drops taste HORRIBLE but I was willing to do anything to get my milk supply back up.

10. My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow. Now for full disclosure I do not actually own one of these pillows but I have heard GREAT things about them and plan to get one for the next child that we have. I just have to say that I HATE the boppy! Do not buy one.

Why I breastfeed??

I'm going to answer the questions I am asked most often about breastfeeding. Then, I'm going to tell you why I choose to breastfeed. My honest reasons. If you do not want to know about my boobs... Well skip this post!

Does it hurt?
Yes. But only at first. With both of my kids it took roughly two weeks before breastfeeding was totally comfortable for me. The second child was harder than the first. At points it was so bad that I would cry out each time Hunter would latch on. Matt would even have a pained look on his face when he would bring the baby to me to nurse because he understood that I was in pain... There are many products available to soothe your breasts if you are experiencing discomfort and I promise, it goes away.

How long do you have to breastfeed?
It's recommended that you breastfeed your infant for at least six months but most pediatricians and organizations stress that a year or longer is better. Honestly, it is up to you. I breastfed Emma exclusively for 6 months and did a mixture of formula/breast milk until 12 months. With Hunter at 10 months (just last week) we had to add 2 oz of formula to his bottles while I'm at work. My production is failing me. (more about that later)

Are my boobs going to sag afterward?
Most likely. Your breasts become larger with pregnancy and engorged with milk after delivery. When they return to their normal size when your milk dries up, you lose all that glorious fullness and breast tissue is lost.

What does it feel like to breastfeed?
Honestly? It feels like relief. When your milk comes in, your breasts get swollen and can actually ache. It isn't necessarily painful but it can be uncomfortable. After you get used to your baby nursing, it feels really good. It's soothing and there really is an amazing bonding moment.

Will it make me lose the baby weight?
It depends on your body. You burn a lot of calories when you breastfeed but I honestly think it varies woman to woman. I've seen women breastfeed and pounds just melt off of them. But there are many who say it didn't help them at all.

Do they really leak?
Yep. If you are able to feed on demand and aren't having to pump a lot, you may leak less. I leaked more the first time around than the second. I have no idea why. Perhaps I wasn't completely emptying my breasts at each feeding. I liked using washable breast pads. Here is a tip: If you start to leak and the baby isn't awake or around to breastfeed either pump or self express. I've self expressed plenty of times into bathroom sinks, toilets, and cups. Yep, I said it.

What if my baby bites me?
It will hurt. You just have to be firm with him or her and take your breast away at each bite. Tell the baby "no." Babies understand more than we give them credit for. They aren't biting to be mean. They are exploring and maybe they aren't hungry.

What if I'm doing it wrong?
If your baby is growing according to his/her pediatrician's liking, you are doing it right. If you have any questions about pain, see a lactation consultant. Actually, make SURE you see one in the hospital and find out if there is one on staff at the pediatrician's office. That's the best advice I can give you about the whole subject.

How do I increase my milk supply?
This is a BIG one for me because my milk supply recently plummeted... So I have done a LOT of research onto this.

A good diet is key to a good milk supply. There are also herbs such as fenugreek that can help. Try Mother's Milk tea or I used Mother's Milk Plus drops. You can buy them at Whole Foods Market. Drink PLENTY of water. That's one of the main culprits of a low milk supply. Avoid antibiotics and antihistamines when possible, they can dry up your milk quickly. Note: if you are pregnant and nursing you should NOT use the fenugreek or Mother's Milk supplements. At that point you should continue with a healthy diet and drink lots of water.

How do I dry up my milk?
So your boobs don't know you are done breastfeeding. You can dry up your milk naturally by slowly weaning your baby or slowly backing off of pumping. With Emma it took about 3 weeks for me to dry up completely after I had finished breastfeeding her. You can also try an antihistamine or ask your doctor for something stronger. If you decided to forgo breastfeeding, I've heard cabbage leaves are great. Just be careful not to get a clogged duct which can lead to mastitis. Try to dry up your milk slowly.

Do I have to breastfeed?
Nope. Whether or not you breastfeed is completely up to you. Try it out for three weeks and if you find you just can't do it, try pumping. If you try pumping and still hate it, just stop. Don't do something that will make you unhappy and stress you out. The baby feels your tension.

 _________________________

Alright, you have my answers to the questions that I get asked most. Now I'm going to let you in on the simply and honest reasons as to why I choose to do it.

Health. It's amazingly good for the baby. There are more nutrients in breast milk than formula. It's easier on your baby's tummy, it's bonding, it's been proven to be more beneficial than formula alone. It's like taking a daily multi vitamin on top of an already balanced, healthy diet. It gives the baby more and does wonders for his/her health. Just google the facts.

Cost. Formula can be very expensive. You could easily spend $100 per month on formula, especially when the baby starts taking up to 8 oz per feeding. Also, Emma would only drink the liquid formula which was SUPER expensive. Mom's milk is free. Even buying an expensive pump is going to cost less in the long run.

Convenience. I love having the ability to breastfeed whenever the baby needs me. I'm also comfortable breastfeeding in public at the drop of a hat. No bottles, no measuring, no mixing, no clean up. All I have to include in my diaper bag for feedings is a nursing cover and a burp cloth.

Boobs. Boobs look great with milk in them. Just ask Matt. If you are a small chested woman who desires a larger rack, then breastfeed. I went from a B to a D with Hunter in the beginning. Too bad it doesn't stay that way forever!!

Bonding. I actually LOVE the moments when I feed in the middle of the night. Just rocking back an forth in the dark with your little one. I also love the way that my kiddos had looked up at me while feeding or how they hold my finger sometimes. ehhh the list goes on and on!

DIY Burp Cloths

I'm here today to share with you one of my go-to Baby gifts! Homemade Burp cloths!

When preggers with Hunter I ran across this great MADE tutorial and instantly pinned it on Pinterest. Before Hunter was born I purchased a ton of fabric and cloth diapers to create my own burp cloths for Hunter.

One of the best tips that I have are to actually purchase a set of light flannel blankets (I like the Carter Sets)

These are typically about $12.00 for FOUR blankets and I like that they are all coordinating! It makes for a much more put together gift...

Now for some fun burp cloth making...

Get out your supplies...

Iron your fabrics

Get your sewing machine ready... I use the Brother PC-420PRW Project Runway Edition Sewing Machine that my parents got for me for Christmas two years ago. I LOVE my machine! It is so easy to use and believe me I am a sewing rookie!

Next, I fold over the fabric to make a flat/clean edge and iron down...

I sew that flattened edge on the center of the "cloth diaper", cut the rest of the fabric to form a strip down the middle, fold and iron to form a straight edge.

Sew down second edge and sew top and bottom to the cloth diaper.
I continue your other coordinating fabrics to make other matching burp cloths... I like to make at least three.

These always make fabulous gifts... I like to pair it with a diaper cake made out of Honest Diapers and some of Hunter's favorite things! (The burp cloths are in the box on the bottom!)
